Renate Schmitzer Costume Design
Born in Nuremberg, Renate Schmitzer completed a tailoring apprenticeship in Cologne. She remained in Cologne to finish her studies at the Werkkunstschule (academy of arts) and to work as an assistant on the city’s stages. Renate Schmitzer has demonstrated her talents in more than 500 national and international productions including the operas Rigoletto, Julius Caesar, The Barber of Seville, Othello, Macbeth, King Lear by Aribert Reimann andWar and Peace in Karlsruhe. She has also worked on plays such as Der zerbrochene Krug, Oedipus, Faust and Maria Stuart and ballets such as The Nutcracker and The Fire Bird. Renate Schmitzer designed the costumes for the filming of the Handel collage Pasticcio by Jean-Louis Martinoty as well as for television shows such as Stars in der Manege. Her experience with musicals includes Evita, West Side Story, Cabaret, The Threepenny Opera and Little Man What Now? The musical Jekyll & Hyde was a new and interesting challenge. Other highlights are The Marriage Of Figaro at the Ulm Theatre, The Flying Dutchman at the Opéra Garnier in Paris, Siddharta at the Royal Opera House in Copenhagen, The Sorrows of Young Werther at the Basel Theatre, The Crucible and From Morning to Midnight at the Frankfurt Theatre as well as Lucretia Borgia at the Opéra de Marseille.
